Ali Al Suwaidi Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at SBEA 2025

The at the Smart Built Environment Awards accorded Ali Al Suwaidi, Vice Chancellor of Finance & Administration, American University of Sharjah with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The accolade recognised a career spanning over 25 years of leadership, innovation, and influence in the built environment and facilities management sectors across the UAE and the GCC region.

A Legacy Built on Leadership and Vision

Ali Al Suwaidi is a well-established name in the Middle East’s facilities and asset management sectors. His professional journey weaves together high-profile roles, strategic stewardship of large-scale assets, and active contributions to industry bodies.

According to his personal site, he describes himself as “a facility management and built environment asset management professional, with specialization in management of tall buildings and megaprojects” and credits a journey built on “the shoulders of pioneers, innovators, rainmakers and nation-builders.”

Over his career, Al Suwaidi has held senior executive and operations leadership positions in both asset-owning organizations and FM service providers.

Key career milestones

  • First Operations Head, Burj Khalifa: One of his standout assignments was as the very first operations director for the iconic Burj Khalifa. In that role, he oversaw the transition from construction to operations, mobilised facility services across a mixed-use superstructure (residential, retail, leisure), and introduced innovations such as the “Project Birth Certificate” approach—an early example of asset lifecycle documentation.

  • Imdaad Leadership: He has served in senior roles at Imdaad, one of Dubai’s leading facility management and sustainability services firms. Notably, he held the position of Senior Executive Director, FMS, and earlier acted as COO overseeing operations across strategic assets in the UAE.

  • Academia & Administration: In March 2024, he was appointed Acting Vice Chancellor – Finance and Administration at the American University of Sharjah. This position allows him to bring operational and asset management insight into the higher education context.

Industry Leadership & Associations

Beyond his corporate roles, Al Suwaidi has been deeply active in shaping the region’s FM and built environment ecosystem through association leadership:

  • Vice President, MEFMA (Middle East Facility Management Association) since 2009, and founding member of the organisation.

  • Chairman of Global FM: He has served in senior roles in Global FM Association (GFM), including as Vice Chairman (since January 2021) and, prior to that, as a board member.

  • Board member of the International Maintenance Association (IMA) and other forums contributing to maintenance, operations, and asset best practices.

He is also a frequent speaker and thought leader, participating in panels, workshops, and conferences on FM, asset management, sustainable operations, smart building technologies, and industry standards.

Why this Award Matters

The Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for individuals whose influence has spanned decades, whose decisions have shaped standards, and whose mentorship has helped raise the next generation of leaders. In Ali Al Suwaidi, the industry recognizes a professional who has bridged the gap between asset owners and service providers, led operational excellence in iconic, complex assets, and helped professionalize the FM and asset management across the GCC.

Looking Ahead

As the industry contends with the demands of climate resilience, net-zero transitions, automation, and evolving occupant expectations, leaders like Al Suwaidi become more essential. His blend of technical insight, operational experience, and strategic vision positions him ideally to mentor future leaders—and to continue influencing policy, standards, and innovation.
