Dubai Airports has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for its air traffic control (ATC) facility at Dubai World Central (DWC). According to Dubai Airports, the certification was awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) under its LEED Existing Building Operations and Maintenance (EBOM) programme. The 19,880m2, which consists of a control tower, technical block, and surrounding grounds, reportedly earned a LEED score of 68. LEED Gold category starts from 60 points.
The facility was assessed on a number of categories, including sustainability, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and materials and resources, UAE state news agency, WAM, reported. The agency added that the assessment revealed that the facility uses 40% less water than the average LEED baseline, with 100% of irrigation being carried out with treated water.
Dubai Airport also scored highly for having a sustainable purchasing policy covering consumables and durable goods in the form of electric and IT equipment, furniture, cleaning products and materials, WAM noted.
Omar Binadai, vice president for engineering services at Dubai Airports, commented: “Due to the unique challenges presented by the functionality of an ATC tower, particularly the requirement for large reflective glass surfaces, very few organisations [in the world] have achieved the Gold standard.
“We are pleased to have achieved this rating and thankful for the close cooperation of Dubai Air Navigation Services and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. Managing efficient and environmentally friendly buildings is in line with Dubai Airports’ commitment to grow and manage our business in a sustainable manner and to limit our carbon footprint."
