Dubai Sports City signs long term agreement with BMTC

Dubai Sports City and Bahri & Mazroei Trading Company (BMTC), the region’s leading provider of lighting, electrical and water solutions has entered an agreement to provide solar power for the community development. The project will include the replacement of existing lighting, designing of uniform lighting levels, adding new lighting poles, supplying, installing & commissioning of LED luminaires, solar panels, and controls as well as maintaining the complete system. Additionally, solar energy will be supplied to the advertising panels on the street lighting poles. The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce dependence on energy-intensive traditional street lighting solutions. Dubai Sports City will be provided with LED lighting, dimming controls, remote monitoring including proactive maintenance alerts with a 100 percent pure solar powered solution.

The contract between Dubai Sports City and BMTC is based on the ESCO model which includes financing over a long-term period and the payback is based on the savings. This brings DSC and BMTC in a long-term partnership and during this time BMTC will be responsible for maintenance and service of the installed system. BMTC was chosen for this prestigious project for its impressive credentials as it is the only provider with proven expertise in both public road lighting, renewable lighting solutions combined with advanced control and automation technologies. In partnership with Schréder, the top-quality provider and performer of outdoor luminaires, BMTC is scheduled to commence work in the first week of June.

Speaking about the new partnership Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Manager and Partner of Dubai Sports City, said, “The partnership between Dubai Sports City and BMTC is a landmark achievement which aligns with Dubai Government’s directive to encourage greener communities which, in the long run, are self-sustainable.”

Esam Al Mazroei, Vice Chairman of Bahri & Mazroei Group, said, “We are delighted to partner with Dubai Sports City for such a prestigious, and first of its kind model project, that serves to be a testimony to BMTC’s capabilities in delivering renewable energy street lighting. Recognized by the Roads & Transport Authority, our LED lighting and solar street lighting solutions will meet Dubai Sports City’s goals for energy efficient and environmentally friendly lighting.”

BMTC will also provide its Smart Controller that can perform remote monitoring, data transfer and analysis of the various individual components installed, thus contributing to greater operational efficiency. By leveraging the big data, Dubai Sports City will have real-time information on the performance of the lighting systems, which can be updated and modified as per requirement.

Kevin J Brennan, General Manager of Facilities for Dubai Sports City, said, “This is a major step forward in the Dubai Sports City strategy to be self-sustaining as far as is possible. It has taken a huge effort from both teams to reach this green energy solution. The installation of solar street lights will also reduce our carbon footprint and save money for the city. We are now looking at significantly extending our use of solar power within the city to further our self-sustaining strategy and deliver cost effective smart energy solutions to our residents.”

BMTC, in conjunction with Dubai Sport City’s technical team, have conducted a comprehensive study of the existing road network as part of the project to identify the most efficient renewable energy solution for street lighting. The new project will replace the generators that are currently being used to power street lights. This will not only help to reduce environmental emissions but also reduce noise and air pollution that arises from the operation of the diesel generators.
