The UAE's President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the launch of the world’s first large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage project capable of delivering round-the-clock renewable energy.
The initiative, announced at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025, was led by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), cementing the UAE’s global leadership in clean energy innovation.
Setting a Global Benchmark in Clean Energy
The facility in Abu Dhabi integrates a 5.2-gigawatt (GW) solar PV plant with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), making it the largest combined solar and storage project globally. This system will deliver 1GW of reliable, baseload renewable energy daily, overcoming the challenge of energy intermittency.
Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Chairman of Masdar, described the project as a “moonshot challenge” achieved through the UAE's dedication to sustainability: “For the first time ever, this will transform renewable energy into a world-leading 1GW of reliable baseload energy every day on an unprecedented scale – a first step that could become a giant leap for the world.”
Economic and Environmental Milestones
The project is expected to create over 10,000 jobs while advancing the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment, highlighted its transformative impact: “By advancing energy infrastructure, we are leading the way in developing cost-effective, scalable renewable energy, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s position as a key player in shaping the future of global energy.”
