Construction technologies enabling growth

How is Trimble enhancing its sustainability agenda for 2024?

Trimble’s sustainability agenda for 2024 demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to

delivering technologies that enable industries to measure, build, and grow in ways that improve the overall quality and efficiency across operations. Our Tekla software solutions include an embodied carbon calculator, which aids in design optimisation to reduce carbon footprint. It provides users with an estimate of the current state of the carbon footprint per element, allowing them to visualise which elements have the most potential for optimisation and compare the carbon footprint of the new design optimisation to the old. We have also made use of cutting-edge applications such as automated and life cycle assessment tools in response to this paradigm change. Through the integration of One Click LCA’s extensive database on the carbon levels of construction materials with Trimble’s Tekla tools, structural engineers can automatically evaluate embodied carbon and life cycle impacts at every stage of a project. This integration gives designers the ability to quickly and easily understand the carbon implications of the structural and material choices they make for both new and existing structures, enabling them to make well-informed decisions. Further underscoring its commitment to clean energy, Trimble is constructing a 1.7-megawatt solar energy array at its Colorado headquarters. This initiative, which is expected to fully power the facility by early 2024, marks a significant milestone in Trimble’s journey towards renewable energy, highlighting the company’s commitment to both sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Please elaborate on the Science-based Sustainability Initiative and how it helped in the sustainability efforts of the company.

Trimble had set up its Science Based Targets (SBTs) in 2021 to reduce emissions, in line with the Paris Agreement and a net-zero future. Since then, we have established a number of objectives with the goal of driving ambitious corporate climate action. These goals are in line with the level of decarbonisation needed to achieve the Paris Agreement’ s objectives, which call for keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels. Trimble made a significant contribution to the industry-wide drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by pushing 25 % of its suppliers to adopt Science-Based Targets. Trimble further urged companies to use technologies with embedded carbon calculators to achieve their targets. With an unwavering commitment to a cleaner future, the company’s long-term goal is to source 100% renewable energy by 2025. By 2030, absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions will be reduced by 50%, with Scope 3 emissions including emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, business travel, and upstream transportation and distribution.

What do you foresee will be the main priorities in the region’s construction practices in 2024?

We believe that tackling upfront carbon is an essential and urgent focus, as the built environment sector can play a critical role in responding to the climate emergency. The recent COP28 summit, which covered crucial aspects of climate change, assures that all projects will take climate change into consideration. As a result, developers will be encouraged to collaborate with contractors who use technology from construction technology experts that have carbon calculators built right into their products. Furthermore, the WorldGBC has issued a bold new vision in which all new buildings, infrastructure, and  renovations will be made with at least 40% less embodied carbon with significant upfront carbon reductions by 2030, along with zero operational carbon emissions.

It is clear that sustainable construction methods, such as the use of environmentally-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, waste reduction, and the integration of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies in building designs, will continue to receive significant attention. Moreover, companies have realised that technology allows for more efficient development of projects in the Middle East due to the rising number of investors, tourists, and expanding population. More projects will be launched in advance of 2030, particularly in light of significant global events like the 2030 Expo in Riyadh. The adoption of advanced technologies like Building Information Modelling (BIM), robotics, and autonomous construction equipment will also transform the way projects are planned, designed, and executed.

Another trend that is becoming increasingly popular in the Middle East is prefabrication and modular construction, which is being driven by the need for projects to be completed faster and more effectively. This can be attributed to the rapid infrastructure development and urbanisation in the region that have created a need for innovative construction methods to effectively handle growing demand.

Please shed light on Trimble’s technologies, which are poised to play a major role in the Middle East construction and infrastructure sectors.

With the growing demand for BIM (Building Information Modeling), Trimble’s BIM solutions, including software solutions such as Tekla Structures, will be widely used for collaborative and detailed 3D modelling in construction projects. Additionally, Trimble’s machine control and guidance systems for heavy construction equipment will be at their peak of use due to the region’s growing interest in robotics and automation in 2024 Another notable solution that is already making waves in the industry is Trimble Connect which facilitates instantaneous data exchange, communication, and cooperation between project teams, all of which are essential for effective construction management today.

As a technology solutions provider and expert, our goal is to consistently innovate and deliver solutions that contribute to the ongoing improvement of the region’s construction sector, ensuring smoother and more efficient workflows.
