At its annual Innovation Day, ALEC, a leading construction firm, announced the launch of its Robotics Strategy, aimed at transforming key construction processes through advanced automation.
This initiative aligns with ALEC's broader Innovation Agenda and focuses on leveraging global partnerships to introduce cutting-edge robotics technologies into its projects and the wider regional construction sector.
Barry Lewis, CEO of ALEC, highlighted the company's commitment to supporting regional government initiatives and driving industry-wide change:
"As a forward-thinking organisation, we understand the transformative potential of robotics in addressing critical industry challenges such as sustainability, labour shortages, and project timelines. Collaboration with stakeholders across the sector is key to ensuring widespread benefits, as a rising tide lifts all boats."
Expanding on a Legacy of Innovation
The Robotics Strategy builds upon the ALEC Robotics Brief, launched in 2017. Over the years, ALEC has tested and deployed nine innovative robotic solutions in real-world projects.
Now, the company plans to evaluate up to 20 new robotics concepts and partnerships annually, collaborating with government bodies, universities, and robotics start-ups.
By 2028, ALEC aims to automate 5% of its construction activities using mature robotics solutions. This goal represents a significant step toward enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the industry.
Phased Implementation
The first phase of the strategy will focus on integrating proven robotics technologies while advancing emerging innovations. Several key technologies were showcased during Innovation Day, including:
- HILTI’s Jaibot: A semi-automated robot for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and interior finishing tasks.
- Construction Robotics’ MULE: A lift-assist device for handling heavy materials on-site.
- Angelswing’s Drone-Based Digital Twin Platform: A tool for improving project planning and execution through drone-generated data.
- NYU Abu Dhabi’s AI and Robotics Research: Focused on autonomous data acquisition for construction projects.
Imad Itani, Head of Innovation at ALEC, described the company's strategic approach: "The construction sector stands at the crossroads of market evolution, environmental consciousness, and technological advancement. At ALEC, innovation is embedded into our DNA. We are setting clear objectives with measurable milestones to ensure consistent progress. By collaborating with global talent and showcasing successful applications, we aim to set a benchmark for what the construction industry can achieve."
The Robotics Strategy underscores ALEC's role as a regional leader in construction innovation, poised to redefine industry standards and deliver enhanced outcomes for stakeholders.
