Dubai welcomed the New Year with its signature sparkle, as its streets, thronged with revellers just hours earlier, returned to their pristine state by the morning of January 1, 2025.
Maryam Majid bin Theneya, Second Deputy Speaker of the Federal National Council, took to social media platform X to share a video showcasing a "sparkling clean" Downtown Dubai. Her post highlighted the remarkable efficiency of Dubai Municipality’s clean-up efforts, which have become an annual feat of organisation and execution.
Dubai Municipality announced that its dedicated team had successfully completed the massive cleaning operation in record time, following a comprehensive plan for waste removal and site restoration after the city's iconic New Year’s celebrations.
A Herculean Effort Across 366 Locations
The extensive operation involved securing and cleaning high-profile celebration sites, including public beaches and fireworks display areas that captured global attention. The municipality credited its efficient clean-up to the deployment of 2,534 "cleaning engineers," 242 supervisory and inspection staff, 299 engineers, and over 255 volunteers. Together, the team covered 366 locations across the city.
Supporting this workforce were 246 specialised machines and vehicles, along with 500 additional waste storage units strategically placed at key locations.
Pristine Streets by Morning
By the morning of New Year’s Day, Downtown Dubai, which had hosted hundreds of thousands of visitors for the festivities, was gleaming. A video shared by Maryam bin Theneya showed the Burj Khalifa’s surroundings, meticulously cleaned, with only a handful of workers putting the final touches on the area.
She praised the clean-up effort in her post, referring to Dubai as “Dar Bou Rashid,” a nod to its leadership under Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Her message, accompanied by a heart emoji, celebrated the swift transformation from a bustling celebration hub to a spotless cityscape.
Behind the Scenes of Dubai’s Clean-Up Machine
Dubai Municipality’s ability to execute such a large-scale clean-up overnight demonstrates its organisational expertise and commitment to maintaining the city’s global reputation for cleanliness and sustainability.
This year’s effort involved 3,330 individuals who worked tirelessly through the night, ensuring the city was ready to shine again as residents and visitors began 2025. This dedicated team exemplified the hard work and precision that define Dubai’s approach to city management.
Dubai’s New Year clean-up is more than a logistical triumph—it is a testament to the city’s ability to balance celebration with responsibility, ensuring its streets and landmarks remain as dazzling as the fireworks that light up its skies.
