‘Superman, our planet needs you’

As the story goes, Superman hails from the planet Krypton and belongs to the extra-terrestrial Kryptonian race. The planet, according to the authors was highly advanced and technologically sophisticated, with a diverse array of cultures and societies. According to the 2012 movie Man of Steel, the Kryptonian civilization had spacefaring explorers, as explained by Superman's father, Jor-El: "Long ago, in an era of expansion, our race spread out through the stars, seeking new worlds to settle upon... For 100,000 years, our civilization flourished, accomplishing wonders." Despite owning super-technology, Krypton was ultimately destroyed due to a catastrophic failure in its planetary core.

The destruction of Krypton, though fictional, serves as a cautionary tale for the potential fate of Earth if we do not take quick action to address the pressing issues facing our own planet. Climate change, environmental degradation, and overconsumption of resources are all major threats to the continued survival of Earth and its inhabitants.

Just as the Kryptonians were unable to prevent the destruction of their planet, we too must take immediate action to address these issues before it is too late. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting endangered species and natural habitats, and implementing sustainable practices in industries such as agriculture and energy production.

Furthermore, the story of Superman and Krypton highlights the importance of exploration and discovery, as Superman's journey to Earth allowed him to not only survive, but also use his powers for good. Similarly, investing in scientific research and space exploration can lead to new technologies and solutions for addressing the challenges facing our planet.

In short, the story of Superman and Krypton serves as a reminder of the fragility of our planet and the importance of taking swift action to protect it. We must learn from the mistakes of the Kryptonians and work towards a sustainable future for Earth and all its inhabitants.

As His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan the President of the United Arab Emirates proclaimed 2023 as the year of sustainability with a goal of reaching net zero emissions, it is important to recognize the urgent need for action to save our planet from the same fate as Krypton, the home planet of Superman.

One of the most effective ways to reduce our impact on the environment is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. This not only reduces gas emissions, but also creates jobs and improves air and water quality.

Another key action is to reduce, reuse and recycle. This not only helps to conserve resources, but also reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and pollutes our oceans. Additionally, choosing products made from sustainable materials and supporting companies with environmentally friendly practices can help drive change in the marketplace.

We must also take steps to protect and preserve our natural habitats and wildlife. This includes reducing pollution, protecting endangered species and their habitats, and preserving wetlands and other important ecosystems. Individual actions, such as reducing meat consumption, using public transportation, and conserving water, can also have a significant impact.

It is important to remember that these actions should not be seen as sacrifices but as an opportunity for a better future. By taking immediate action, we can make a positive impact on the planet and ensure that future generations can enjoy a healthy and sustainable world.

The UAE's announcement is a step in the right direction, but it's important for all countries and individuals to take responsibility for the health of our planet. Now is the time for action to avoid the mistake of Krypton and preserve our home for future generations.

Richard Donner’s 1978 film Superman had Marlon Brando as the superhero’s father Jor-El. Jor-El had a prophetic line as it seems very relevant forty years later: The people of Earth are different from us, it's true, but ultimately I believe that is a good thing. They won't necessarily make the same mistakes we did, but if you guide them, and give them hope, that’s what the symbol means.

It is time to act. It is time to put on our capes, believe in ourselves as superheroes, and guide the world to avoid the mistakes that Kryptonians made. It is time to act responsibly in everything that we do before it is too late.
